A Blog of Thrones, Chapter 33 (Eddard VIII): The Madness of King Bob

Previously on A Blog of Thrones, Varys plotted. Today, Varys plots. Hey, seasons last years; we can take our sweet time here.

"We who presume to rule must do vile things for the good of the realm, however much it pains us." I'm suddenly having a flashforward to the end of A Diversion With Dragons as Varys says this.  Actually I'm having a flashforward to the entirety of ADWD

We've gathered in the Small Council chambers so that King Robert Baratheon, the First of His Name, may plot the death of a 14-year-old girl on the other side of the world. #priorities

Robert holds a vote. He, Varys, Pycelle and Renly are yay, Ned and Selmy are nay. By a vote of 4-2, the jury has condemned Daenerys Targaryen to death for the sin of being a pregnant Targaryen. And they say strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government.

The conversation turns to the method. Pycelle perks up at the mention of the Tears of Lys. I wonder what that could mean? Ned's too busy resigning in a righteous poof to notice, because of course he is. The various players should thank their lucky stars this isn't Dorne; Catelyn may be a psychotic, impulsive, overprotective parent, but she'd probably be able to see right through this nonsense.

Anyway Ned goes back to his room, all ready to bugger off, when along comes Littleprick. Oh, hello, Satan, what japes have you cooked up for us today? Seems he's found the brothel that Stannis and Jon Arryn visited.  Cue the only line from The Godfather Part III worth quoting.

Given how huge Ned's household is, I really don't understand why he didn't try to dispatch a messenger to Dragonstone to figure out what the hell Stannis was up to. Other than the fact that Ned Stark is a blithering idiot, of course.

Post-Craig Review: Dr. No

Back to the very beginning. This is a lie. "The beginning" would surely be a review of Ian Fleming's 1953 novel Casino Royale...
