Is BSG Really a Liberal Show? Season 2

Honestly, there's not much here. Anyway, let's dig in:

Roslin bans abortion.

First of all, that they actually use the a-word is telling. Liberals call it "choice" whenever they can. After "fighting my whole life for a woman's right to control her body," Roslin bans abortion because her first commandment was "make babies." Now this is interesting, because apparently abortion was legal on 11 of the Colonies before the attacks, but not on Religious-Right Gemenon. (Although, "the girl is the property of her parents until she's 18?" That's going a little bit too far.) So actually, Roslin's executive order is the complete opposite of Roe. As opposed to overturning laws banning abortions in the majority of the country, Roslin overturns laws legalizing abortion on most of the Colonies. And, oh yeah, she's one of the good guys. And Baltar the slimebag is the one who calls her on it!

Also, she hasn't fought her whole life for a woman's right to control her body; in that one episode I really don't like to talk about much, she tried to have Sharon's baby aborted, over the mother's objections. You know what? Between that and kidnapping the kid, it's not surprising that Athena doesn't say "oh, you have cancer again? Go ahead and stick my daughter with a needle, sure." (Blah blah, commentary, blah blah stem cells and fetal blood, blah blah.)

Roslin's cancer cure apparently had something to do with stem cells.

Except that never made it onto the screen. Good job. File that under: why I think "Epiphanies" is the worst episode of the show.

Baltar's election.

So having pegged his opponent as a religious nutjob, a charismatic guy with no experience to speak of becomes President. And it's a disaster. (Meanwhile, over on Doctor Who, a charismatic guy who literally did not exist eighteen months ago becomes Prime Minister. And it's a disaster.) I can only point out that these episodes ran in 2006 and 2007, respectively, because otherwise they look like outright jabs at Obama.

Lt. Thorne would fit right in at Abu Ghraib.

Well, yeah, that's true. But then, pretty much everyone realizes that Abu Ghraib was an atrocity. Bush may have been a terrible president, but he wasn't Cain.

Demand Peace, Make War on Man

Hilariously undermined by the fact that it was organized by a Cylon. We don't hear a peep from this group after Gina nukes herself and Cloud Nine. Great missed opportunity for Zarek to denounce the suicide bomber in "Epiphanies," by the way.

The Press

"Freedom of the press is not a liberty to slander."
-Adama.

I love that line. And then there's D'anna Biers, who is "so sick of people like [Adama] questioning [her] patriotism" when it's blatantly obvious that she has none.

Conclusion

Yeah, once again, there might be some clever liberal subtext running around underneath all this, but I guess I'm just too thick to see it.

Post-Craig Review: Dr. No

Back to the very beginning. This is a lie. "The beginning" would surely be a review of Ian Fleming's 1953 novel Casino Royale...
